In the early days of her career, Tatum O’Neal hit the big screen at just nine in Paper Moon, acting alongside her dad. Winning an Oscar and Golden Globe at 10 made her the youngest to ever grab those awards. But success didn’t shield her from tough times. Tatum battled drug issues and opened up about her father’s alleged abuse and role in her introduction to drugs in her 2005 book, A Paper Life.

This difficult journey led to a heartbreaking split, and for almost two decades, father and daughter lost touch. In 2011, Ryan O’Neal, Tatum’s dad, confessed he didn’t know where she was for years. “It’s embarrassing,” Ryan admitted. “I’m only learning now how to find a way back. We’re working on it.”

Despite the challenges, the two started patching things up in 2011. Some of their story made it to the short-lived OWN series, Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals.

Fast forward to September 2020, amid COVID-19 and harsh wildfires. Tatum’s son, Sean McEnroe, shared a touching photo of Ryan, Tatum, and her three kids reuniting after years apart.

In Sean’s words, “This is one of the most memorable photos of my life.” The last time they were all together was in 2003 at the Paper Moon Anniversary. With the West Coast burning, the O’Neals’ reconciliation shows that anything is possible.
